Teaching Pedagogy

"Teaching means extending your family
because you will be part of each others family."

Sir Bendika Ilman, class adviser of Primary 4B and also my cooperating teacher. For a month, I've seen how close and comfortable are the pupils under his supervision.

Sir Bendika's Teaching Method

Sir Bendika, also as my cooperating teacher is good in using art of questioning when teaching. He effectively lead the pupils in thinking what must be the right answer as he discusses the lesson which leads in developing their critical thinking skills. Instead of spoonfeeding, he throws questions to see what his pupils understand in the lesson. He thus uses the pupils answer to tackle the lesson.

This photo of Sir Andri teaching English under Primary 4B was taken last February 13, 2020 giving attention to his pupils about the lesson.

Sir Andri's Teaching Method

Sir Andri Meiranto mostly handles English class at Pelita Nusantara. He uses active discussion method, the ideal discussion method that must be apply in class. First, he used games for warm-up activity as introduction about the lesson. He applied inductive method by having a group work on sharing ideas about the lesson. Thus, he engaged the pupils in more cooperative work wherein the groups share their works to the other groups.

In my observation, all the pupils had the chance to participate, take lead, and judge each work which had develop their teamwork and critical skills. Sir Andri let the pupils take control on their own learning but never fails to facilitate and guide them.

Teaching Tip from Sir Andri:

He taught me two things you must apply while teaching,

1.      Lessen the T-T-T or Teachers Talking Time,

2.      In giving direction, there must be follow-up question (to check if they can follow the direction given.)

for example, divide the class into two groups (what will you do?) make one line for each group (how many lines will you make?). On the board, write R if the statement is reality and F if the statement is fantasy (what will you write?).

Sir Andri had a great contribution on what I achieved during the SEA-Teacher Project. He showed me the meaning of the common lines “never say no”, “overcome your fear” and “out of your comfort-zone.” And great results happened to me.

Primary 3B is under the supervision of Sir Deki Bagus Herdani, a joyful teacher who oftenly greet us with "Magandang Umaga Miss" (which means Good Morning Miss)

Sir Deki's Teaching Method

Sir Deki is a role-model teacher when teaching his class. With enthusiasm, he first acts out what the pupils must do and then they follow him after. Sir Deki travels the four corners of the classroom when discussing and when he feel like the pupils are out of energy, he would suddenly ask his pupils to stand –up and do some quick energizer such as dance, exercise or short games.

Miss Saldia Kartika, class adviser of Primary 2A. This photo is taken last February __, 2020 while teaching Health Education by engaging the pupils in thinking critically through role-playing.

Miss Saldia's Teaching Method

Miss Saldia, handling middle childhood kids are fun of role-playing method. Since the pupils book are full of fun activities, she would ask them to participate by giving the situation about the lesson and ask the pupils, “what must you do?”. So, the pupils act the situation out which develop their problem-solving, social, and psychomotor skills. Thus, they can apply this in real-life situations.

Miss Yosephine Gloria Marpaung or Miss Yos is the class adviser of Primary 1B. We only attended this class once for teaching observation and we became fond with the adorable kids. I did not had the chance to teach them, due to conflict of my schedule.

Miss Yosephine's Teaching Method

Miss Yos, supervises Primary 1B gently. Having a short span of attention, Miss Yos provides a lot of activities when teaching. During our observation in her class, she teaches the lesson by getting leaders from the pupils (Miss Yos teaches parts of the body by using her pupils as model). She plays songs and uses tangible objects instead of just pictures which is very important for kids at this stage of learning.

Materials and Innovation

Books is the primary reference of Pelita Nusantara in teaching, as it has everything from lesson plans to activities. The books are of high-satisfaction because it includes the development of pupils vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

For innovation, the teachers are provided with a digital copy of the pupils books that is why speaker, laptop and projector are also in great use. This digital copy is what they use during discussion. But board and chalk or markers were never eliminated because it will always effectively help in teaching.

Sources of Learning and Technology

Each classroom in Pelita has small section where in story books are kept. This story books are used every morning before the class starts. They read stories and write the elements of the story they’ve read. Moreover, the school has library for more great stories, a gym and pool for recreational activities, they also has a music room. And for me, I’m amazed by the school playgrounds because it is very conducive for the pupils who really loves playing.

Authentic Assessment

The school generally assess pupils performance traditionally. They have a weekly test and importantly their quarterly test. As I observed the teachers method of teaching, they give important attention to pupils moral behavior that is why they also assess pupils performance through product-oriented task. Active participation through recitation of Sir Bendika, group work and games by Sir Andri, role-playing participated by Miss Saldia’s pupils, drawings, and even the points given to them listed in the side of the board are proofs that the teachers does not focus only on paper and pencil but instead holistical development.
