“...we try to have our kids to live and learn things by examples. Thus our teachers are not only teaching but also educating and coaching life skills. In other words: we walk the talk.”

By combining National and International Curriculum, sharing experiences and values with many other schools, Pelita Nuantara enables young people to become healthy, responsible citizen, environmentally aware, understanding others and cooperative.
Curriculum
Pelita Nusantara School uses the National Curriculum or CAMBRIDGE Curriculum from National Ministry of Learning Curriculum, having the concept, ‘The Active Learning Program’ which offers the pupils the opportunities to be independent, tolerant, and open-minded. Wherein, teachers’ guides and motivates them to maximize their potentials for self-actualization and face challenges in their community and global world. This curricula is designed purposely to cater the pupils in Indonesia who value solid root in National Curriculum yet want to take advantage of the best and latest learning innovations around the world.
Academic
Support System
Since 2006, Pelita Nusantara School are having Immersion Program and collaborative work with schools from around the world such as Singapore, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Thus, the school is supported by the cooperative parents of the pupils headed by Miss TriRisky Amelia, the school principal and with the commitment and responsibility of the teachers as they guide the pupils in learning.
Teaching System
The school is surrounded
by excellent teachers. Each teacher handles specific subject area under
specific grades (In Pelita, they use the term Primary for Grade). Pelita
Nusantara School has twelve classes consisting of two sections in each primary
and each section has their class advisers. Pelita Nusantara is a learner-centered environment, they just don't build academic excellence but also hone moral values of the pupils.
Materials and Learning Sources
Pelita Nusantara School is highly dependent on books. All the teachers’ lesson plans, students activities, tests, reviews and even songs and wrap-up activities are all included in their books. Moreover, even the links and websites about the additional materials in each lesson are included in their books. Thus, the teachers has their digital copy of the pupils book which is more effective because it includes the audios and videos about their lesson. They uses this digital copy for presentations and discussions. There were no visual materials displayed in the corner or walls inside the classroom such as the traditional elementary classrooms in the Philippines but their books were 100 percent reliable and specific.
Thus, Pelita Nusantara School has music room, indoor gymnasium, computer room, pool and library for additional learning experiences. The school environment is very conducive because it also has playgrounds around the school which energizes the pupils during their break time.
The photos above are some of the facilities of Pelita Nusantara, thus the playgrounds the pupils spend their free time with. Each class has a break every after class which helps refresh their body, mind ad attention before the next lesson begins.
Measurement
and Evaluation System
Pelita Nusantara School has great concern in values and behaviour of the pupils. Since our first day of observation, I noticed the names of each pupils listed in the side of their boards with corresponding numerical value that changes every day which I later found out that these are points added to their scores if they behave well or if they made good deeds. This is one of the school’s method to assess their pupils.
They also uses paper and pencil test such as quarterly exam and quizzes (usually at the end of the week) for evaluating their pupils. The teachers also uses process and product oriented task such as drawings and role-plays.
Teaching
Plan
As for the teaching plan, the teachers’ greatly uses active discussion method. For having an effective book, they follows the flow of lesson. Their lesson plan is most-likely the detailed lesson plan taught to us although the title parts are different, the method is likely the same. It includes:
- Objectives
- Recommended Teaching Time
- Materials
- Lesson Development
- Follow-up Activity
- Further Practice
- Assignment
There are also teaching tips and teaching strategies included in their
lesson plan.
Sir Andrew, the teacher at the above photo has an ideal
teaching using active discussion method. The pupils are well engaged in the lesson
because he let them enjoy take lead, cooperate and judge their own work. |
📌📌📌
The school logo is "A Homey School for Future Leaders" and their flag ceremony every Monday morning proves it. Each class take turns in leading the flag ceremony wherein they look like real soldiers leading the country. This what excites me every Monday.
